Beginner photographer! What basic equipment do I need to take some family portraits? I have a Nikon D80 10.2 digital camera. It has a 18 - 135mm Nikon DX lens, and I just have the standard camera mounted flash. I took a photography class about 10 years ago, but have forgotten more than I remember! I bought the camera for my home based business that I take tons of pictures for. Most of the pictures are done outside however so, I never worried about lighting. I would like to start taking some quality family portraits. I'm not looking to start a business with this, but just do it for my immediate and some extended family and friends. I would love some advice on what kind of lighting I need and possibly some resources on how to position lighting and subjects etc... I am prepared to invest a resonable amount of money, but this will not generate an income, so... not too much. Possibly $300 to $400. What are the most common mistakes made by beginner photographers? I'm particularly interested in mistakes made while using a digital camera. I guess I should add that I'd like to know mistakes in *picture taking*, such as direction of the sun, ISO etc... rather than plain moronic reasons, like leaving the cap on.
Beginner photographer, need recommendations. Please, help? I've never considered myself a photographer (never had the eye for it) and so have a very basic digital camera. But I've reached the end of my annoyance with this camera (half the pictures come out blurry. I've taken two pictures of the exact same thing and one comes our blurry while the other doesn't!) Anyway, I don't know if that's operating error or the camera itself, but the point is I have been wanting a new camera for a long time. I would prefer one that would be able to take pictures of small animals(I'm a zoologist, it comes in handy, especially when baby hummingbirds are the size of bees). But it should also be good for close ups/portraits. I feel inept in even attempting to ask what I need the camera to do, so any help is much appreciated. Usually I do my own die-hard research, but I don't even know where to start. Thank you! Thank you all so far for your input! I'm getting a little familiar with the terminology, and I hope this extra info helps. Allow me to specify - I mainly want the camera to take photos of wildlife, and since I work first hand with animals, I want the camera to take good photos from a range of small (baby hummers small) to close ups, like people actually handling the animals. A stabilizer sounds perfect, and I don't want to have to buy many lenses to do the work I need to do, seeing as I'm not a professional. Good Beginning Camera? I'm a beginner photographer. Very Beginner like I've never really taken pictures much. But when i do they come out pretty good. I was thinking that being a sports photographer would be an awesome job, so i want a camera thats not too expensive but still a good camera. I am going to The New York Giants training camp in a week where ill be anywhere from 20-100 feet away from the players. i thought that would be a good place to practice. photography? aperature and shutter speed? im going to be taking sports photos today. i know i need a high shutter speed to stop the action. but it is currently overcast. will i have enough light to take pics becuz of the high shuttter speed? do i need to put the flash on? help? im a beginner photographer :]

Ideas on camera? Okay, I have narrowed it down to three cameras. The Nikon D80, Canon EOS 400D Rebel XTi and Sony DSLR-A100. I am having a hard time choosing.
