- Ten years ago I would have told you to enroll in your high-school journalism class. If your school offers a photography class (Some larger schools do) that would be another good place to learn. Now-days, I suspect most schools have gone digital for the newspaper and journalism, so the dark-room stuff is less available there. If you want to practice taking photos, any digital camera will give you a good way to learn to "see" your back-ground, focus, composition, and so on. Our little Kodak "Share" was relatively inexpensive, and rated as a best buy. You can also print digital photos in black and white if you like. I got some good hints recently with a simple Google search on "hints to improve photography" and "taking better pictures" Good luck.
- Black + White film is still the best teacher. Goto a nite school course and learn there, use their facilities etc do the course and you will know the answers a
- Take a photography class. Somewhere in your area there has to be one. Buying a camera without first knowing the basics is like buying a car before you learn to drive. Oh it can and has been done. Its just a lot easier having someone to answer questions and give advice. If all else fails, enroll in the New York Institute of Photography (nyip.com) correspondence course. Contact them and they'll tell you what camera you'll need to get started. Since they've been in business for 97 years they must have a clue as to what they are doing.
