Cheap beginner SLR camera for gig photography - advice needed!?

Hi, I'm looking to invest in a cheap SLR camera, just to get started in gig photography. Ideally, I'm looking for advice on what kind of things I need to photograph bands performing under stage lighting. I'd appreciate any help! I'd like to get a digital SLR which I know will bump the cost up considerably, but I don't know what lenses etc I need for gig photography...

1. I have a Canon Rebel K2 SLR and I really like it. It was about 400 Canadian plus taxes. I have the lens that comes with the camera (too poor yet to buy another) and it works pretty well for most things. You might want a wide angle lens too... and a good zoom (300mm?) lens too. Just ask at the store... and make sure you go to a few to get the best advice. Good luck!
2. You might want to consider what your basic needs are for shotting and then build a bag of goodies from there. For club shooting you're going to need a big flash and a zoom lens with a good working range - 35-200mm maybe. Since you don't seem to want to spend a lot, you might consider looking at used 35mm gear; a lot of people are trading in to go digital and you could get some better than average gear at low prices right now. I would look at getting a Canon AF 35mm body. This will allow you to migrate a lot of equipment to digital when you make the leap. You should be able to fully equip yourself if you go used 35mm for the cost of a DSLR body and have some left over funds. Must haves: - good Auto Focus body - good working lens - a wide angle zoom might be a good choice - a big flash Nice to have: - monopod - more lenses; faster lenses
3. I would recommend for the price a Nikon D50. It has the manual functions so that you can get good shots in those kinds of lighting situations. For a lens, Nikon makes a 55-200 mm lens which worked great for when I shot a ska band from the balcony. They sell it for about $200. The faster the lens (wider aperture) the better! If you'd consider going with a film camera to start, they are selling dirt cheap as the manufacturers are only making a few models any more. Someone mentioned a canon K2 which is a good one, or the Nikon N65 or N80.
4. Hi, I shot live music/ performance photography professionally for 10 years. I reccommend starting with a basic Canon digital rebel with a standard zoom lens. 28-105, an additional flash eos 560, and a soft box diffuser for the flash. You may want to get a wide angle lens as well 20mm or such for full stage shots. good luck and have fun. its nice to get into shows for free and get paid... p.s. buy it from b and h in new york..they have the best prices and great service.
5. Bands mean bad lighting and lots of moving around,Not the best eather way, Canon has droped the price of its Rebel to 650.00, Add on there 50mm F1.8 lens 80.00 set the ISO to1600 and ya should be right about wear ya need to be.I don't like the look a flash produces this setup should get the pix with out that blinding poof in everybodys eyes. And If ya get knocked over in the mash pit your not out several thousand for a new camera.
