Is this a good camera for a beginner?
I am a beginner photographer, still learning... I have been wanting to get a digital SLR for a while now but just haven't had the time to check them out/learn anything or had the money to spare. Would this camera be good for a beginner: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7026069&productCategoryId=abcat0401005&type=product&id=1099394810083 Just want some opinions, I think it looks like a really good one, but eh what do I know? :P thank you I was thinking about the xti actually before settling on this one, but 700.00 is too much out of my budget.

- Probably the most popular dSLR in the world. Do yourself a favor and save up a few more quid and get the XTi instead.
- It's great for beginner. You're going to face a steep learning curve with this one, so be prepared to get frustrated when you're stuck. However it's going to be worthed it because since this is a DSLR, once you master this camera, you're going to find only a little time to adapt to another DSLR - even the professional one. You can also learn photography principles in this camera - which is what a beginner should do. But before rushing to the store and getting the camera at once, go to your local camera shop (not Best Buy, a real camera shop), and ask around. Try the camera in your hand, take a shoot or two. If it feels right in your hand, then by all means get this thing.
- It's a good camera. I am a hobbiest photographer, have been for decades. I have used Canon digital cameras and find them easy to use, flexible, and they take great pictures. The camera you have selected is great because 1). you can shoot automatic, pre-set, or fully manual. Great for learning and shooting while learning. 2) You can change the lens. This give you more range when making pictures, plus its also great for learning how different lens work. 3) Its not that expensive, you'll save in film costs. Buy a couple good memory cards and a decent color printer and you are set to go. Have fun!
- This is a fine starter camera. But the thing to remember here for the cost conscious, is that once you choose a manufacturer, you will want to stick to the same one so you won't have to keep buying new lenses. And make sure that camera comes with a lens, not just the body. I got a good deal on EBay when I bought my camera. Shop around, take your time and get a model that has the features you like and will make good use of. Once you have the model you want, search on line for the best deals. And beware of the grey market, cameras made in other countries, not meant to be sold in the US.
- excellent beginner camera. the xti is the exact same camera but with a slightly higher mp rating (10.0 i think). for all intents and purposes you will never use that. the xt totally rocks. i use them (and the xti) in my classroom and for personal stuff. they're easy to use and not too heavy. my only complaint is the kit lens. insufficient zoom for anything further than 20 ft or so. but the xt takes all canon eos lenses so it's easy to upgrade. an excellent choice for your first dslr.
- Until very recently, it was still the "most used" Canon digital SLR, so yes, it is a good camera. http://www.flickr.com/cameras/canon/
- Mere_Mortal is right. And there are better prices at this time on the one you like. For eg. 399.00. Check this site for reviews.... http://www.dpreview.com Digital cameras only, reviews by consumers on cameras. Just out cameras reviewed by experts. But the XTi is my want to buy. If you buy a package deal, only get the 18-55mm lens as the other zooms that usually come with it don't have vibration reduction. The zooms that have it are in the IS series. They're not much more. And you'll get much better results and you can buy in stages. The web site above will give you dot coms to buy from. Cheers!
- A camera in hand better than none. :)
- The XT is ap:/n excellent camera, as is the XTi... you may want to check the same cameras out at .. http://Adorama.com ... they are always lower priced than Best Buy, they are quick and efficient.. I buy almost all my gear there, or at http://bhphotovideo.com ...
- Those are good cameras for people wanting to get into photography. However, if you decide to attend college as a photography major, they will require you use a manual slr film camera.
- 1) It's the camera I have and I love it. I'm considering getting a another body 2) Shop around. Stores like Best Buy is not the first place you should be looking at to get a camera, unless they're having a sale. Camera Shops are: http://www.canogacamera.com/detail.aspx?ID=23896 For $30 more than the price of the XT at BB, you can get the XTi at the other shop: http://www.canogacamera.com/detail.aspx?ID=37874 The camera and the kit lense is enough to start off on. 3) I'm waiting until late Jan, to see what Canon is rolling out for the new year. This particular model has been discontinued, so I heard, so the announcement of the new camera may drop the price a little. But by waiting, I may also be waiting too long to get it and may not be able to do so later. *Edit: Here is another good site: KEH http://www.keh.com/OnLineStore/ProductList.aspx?Mode=searchproducts&item=0&ActivateTOC2=false&ID=&Size=&BC=DC&BCC=3&CC=1&CCC=1&BCL=&GBC=&GCC=&KW=digital%20rebel%20xt *Edit: Places that deals that are too good to be true are almost always to good to be true. Here are two examples and the review of their store http://www.bestpricecameras.com/prodetails.asp?prodid=713192 http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Best_Price_Cameras_6 http://www.expecam.com/products.asp?product_id=13477&engine=shopcartusa http://www.resellerratings.com/store/USA_Photo_Nation If you end up ordering through an on-line store 1) Make sure that you've handled the camera at another store so that you'll know what it feels like in your hands 2)Check on the store reputation before ordering. As you'll see on the review site, many people have fallen for the trap. 3)See if they'll honor the online price and let you just pick up the item in-store(though higjhly unlikely) I had a good experience with Canoga Camera. I won an item off their E-bay store and they let me pick it up rather than pay for shipping. They still charged for it, but it was cheaper than having it mailed and I was able to check out the lens right away in the store.
