Good SLR camera for a beginner?
I'm really interested in photography and i'm thinking about doing photography as an elective or be a photographer for journalism at my high school. Anyone have any ideas of good, cheap beginner SLR cameras? Here's a link of pics i've taken using my canon powershot sd400 digital camera. Some of the pics are messed up but that was long ago..http://www.flickr.com/photos/48976100@N00/449785655/

- Get a good used Nikon or Canon SLR with a good general zoom lens. craigslist has them for under $250 and you can try them out before you buy. Since you love shooting macro shots, see if you can find a good used macro lens or a zoom with a macro feature. If your school already has lenses for Nikon's or Canon's buy the camera body that will let you use the schools cameras ... if they will let you.
- well, in the world of the DSLRs, most of the time the expensive item is the lens. if you buy a body only Canon 400d, it cost about 700$ USD. but if you buy it with the 17-85 mm IS lens, it cost about 1400$USD. Canon 400D should do fine. it is one of the best entry level DSLR around in the market. with low noise at high ISOs, it's perfect for your needs. i am a user of the 400D and i also own a 40D and i find that Canon's cameras are generally more user friendly than nikon in multiple ways. also, the greatest advantage of canon over nikon is the lens price. as i have said, the lenses for DSLRs are the most expensive items in your bag. so, if you are on a buget, Canon lenses are usually cheaper and slightly better(in my opnion) than Nikkor Lenses.
- All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on....... The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet. I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice. The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need. Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures. I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
