What are some good cameras for a beginner who is interested in photography?

I am more interested in a digital camera, maybe the Canon Powershot S5 IS. But I've read in reviews that the S5's pictures can come out grainy. Photo quality is very important to me. I want a camera that has some advanced features, but is still useable for a beginner. Preferably $400 or less.

1. the s5 or s3 are both great cameras, the quality of the picture may have been the person behind the camera not always the camera and settings have alot to do with it.

3. i'm still a beginner in this field, honestly...but i've gotten into some better cameras...but i started on a nikon 4 mp. any of that brand seems to take great pics, and i got some really nice closeups of flowers/people, etc. just mess around with your settings/ light settings and stuff. you can do it on pretty much any digital. goodluck!
4. just get anything with at least 7mp and 4x zoom. they are really good. they are at the most 130 bucks
