How do I build a Website to Sell my Photography?

I've been doing Photography for several years on a small scale. I want to make a functional website where customers can view and buy their photos. Where do I start? How do I do this? Please Help! I do mostly Family Portrait type work

  1. I don't think it's that easy [if not impossible] for you to sell your photos. There already are some sites that any user can host their photos [flickr.com,photobucket.com,deviantart.com] and any member can view. Of course in flickr.com an author can disable their photos from being private, meaning that no one will be able to Right click and save them;just view them. So my opinion is that you cannot sell photos over the Internet. Bummer huh.... ;)
  2. Funny ... I just answered this question a few minutes ago. So, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to copy and paste my answer here. He was asking about selling sports photos online, you're asking about family pix. It works the same either way. So here's the earlier post: If you're really interested in making money from such a site, I suggest getting a Pro Gallery on Shutterfly. It's really well-suited to selling sports photos. I've had a Pro site for two years now - selling mostly pix from a fishing tournament I shoot every year. It's the only way these days to do this profitably. Go here to get to Shutterfly and exlore from there. http://www.jimsdigitaldiary.com/digital_... (Disclosure statement: I list the Shutterfly link this way because I have an affiliate relationship with Shutterfly, and I'm paid for anyone who goes there via my site and buys anything. Just thought you should know. That's one of several ways I make my living as a photographer and website enterpreneur.)
  3. I Love SmugMug Here is a coupon code: "sgMNytGIY4qd2" you can use to save a few dollars on SmugMug (I also save if you use this code). "Unlimited Space" - and they mean it! They have designed an excellent site, you have tons of options, and it's very easy to use. You can have Public Galleries, Private Galleries (good for your personal stuff), Galleries with passwords, galleries without passwords. You can set prices per gallery or per photo. You can have them handle the order or you can have an email sent to you when someone places an order and you can intervene the order so you can do any special touchups you want (or the customer requests). For fancy stuff, they give you APIs as well as other code you can modify and customize. The Customer Service is Excellent as well. I looked at Shutterfly, and had a Pro Gallery for awhile, but they cater much more to the consumer then the Pro, so getting them to do things a Pro would want over a consumer was tough. Smugmug caters to both, but the guy who owns it is a Photographer himself, so he understands the needs of Pros and has designed it in that way. It's just a Great Site, I've never been more pleased with a service (and I'm a hard one to satisfy) - Check it out!
