  1. Beginning Photographer? you dont even need either of these. you should first get a camera that you can learn the art of photography with, and it doesnt have to cost 700-900 $ which is what youre looking at. for a learner a dececnt 2-4 Mpix camera that has an adaptable lens housing. Even used equipment is good. A perfect camera would be the Cannon C740 or equivalent, you have good resolution and you can add polarizers, filters and star filters to it. 52mm adapter ring. costs about 200$ max. the accessories are about 15$ each....and with smart cards you can have tons of memory. Dont get sucked into trying to impress your friends or have them try to impress you. I know the Nikons are impressive, but you will not "learn" photography with them. You take your photography to them once youve learned. good luck
  2. Go and hold both in your hands. Cycle through the menus. Figure out what all the buttons do. One will be better for you. One persons + is anothers - i.e. its too small for one is just right for another. In the end they are both Nikon and good cameras (I am a Canon guy myself). Get the one that feels right. If you still cant decide, get the cheaper one and get another lens to go with it. In the end its the lens that give better pictures, not the body.
  3. The D40x is several generations newer. It has a larger sensor than the D70 and has a different body. I am not familiar with all of the features of a D70 but the D40x is more advanced. That being said, the D70 is much cheaper. Your looking at around $400-$500 whereas the D40x is in the $700 dollar range. Here is a good comparison of the two. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=nikon_d70%2Cnikon_d40x&show=all
