Digital Photography Secrets
The BEST book or website that teaches a beginner DSLR PHOTOGRAPHY?
Just starting out and need to know the basics that every photographer needs to know. I've taken pictures with point and shoots for years, but want to advance. Needs to have photography terms and instructions for all aspects of photography... from which lenses to use for certain photos to cleaning the lenses (and everything in between). Thanks.

- I don't recommend learning photography online or through a book... it can be very overwhelming. I suggest you find a real class. You can usually find them in community colleges, rec centers, photography studios, and camera stores. However... look into getting a copy of "Digital Photography for Dummies..." not that you're a dummy or anything... it just has really good information. Good luck!
- If you can go to a college, or join a local club go for it, it's much better to have the Tutor right there with you. Any other way is the hard way to get the 'overview' of the subject you need, it will seem more complicated than it actually is and will take much longer. (Years instead of weeks) The basics are actually pretty strait forward, the countless variations, specialties and techniques only time and experience will teach, but a basic course will have you taking good pictures (Instead of snaps) in a few weeks. Take hundreds of pictures, each one will have a lesson in it, not least of which is 'seeing' the picture in the first place! Think of it as learning the scales before you start to play tunes on a piano. Enjoy and good luck. Chris
- I agree with the first two posters. DSLR's are really just advanced digital versions of 35mm cameras, so all the techniques are the same when using them, so taking a class in photography and learning in a structured format (instructor and fellow students) will enrich your learning and save you a lot of frustration. For more detailed "basic" training can be found on this site. http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm
- the best book ive found yet, is understanding exposure-2nd edition by bryan peterson.. i have quite a few of his books, and theyre all great, but understanding exposure is definately the best... that book and the manual for your DSLR will give you a great basis-- just remember to take it slow, and enjoy the ride... photography is an amazing field to be a part of. :)
