Good beginner photography camera?

I'm in high school and next year I will be taking a photography AND graphics design course. Both of which i'll need a good camera for. So I've decided to upgrade and get a better camera for my classes and because it's becoming a hobby of mine. My main wants with a camera are low light problems (something that brightens things up if there is little light) and red eye reduction. My parents are willing to spend up to $350 on the camera. I'm new to all this so I'm not familiar with which brands are the best and everything. So I would just like some suggestions on which ones would be good for that price range. Thanks a bunch.

  1. Since you want to learn how to be a photographer (not just point and shoot) the best camera for now would be a 35mm SLR -- Nikon or Canon -- Look on craigslist in a city near you. You should find a good used 35mm SLR with lens for under $250 ... that will give you some extra money for a tripod or electronic flash or even a nice used Nikon or Canon lens (stay away from the third-party lenses).
  2. I use a Canon PowerShot A640 10mp beauty that you can overide the settings. I have been a pro, amature for years, starting over 50 years ago and have had pro camera's from 4x5 view camera's, Hasselblad medium format, and a wonderful Lieca 35 mm that I inherited from my grandfather. I love my A640 because I can do most all what I want with it and for you, it would be a great digital camera to learn from. The thing to consider is to have the largest megapixels you can afford, uses regular batteries like AA ones and get a few sets of rechargable ones, not propitiatory batteries like sony and others use, SD cards (not the mini, but the regular size ones) they are the most common, and a good brand name. Canon, Richo and others are good ones. I'd stay away from Kodak and Sony as they use propeitory batteries and in sony's case, memory stick which is more expensive then SD cards. Your learning curve will be considerably less then mine. You have instant feedback, whereas I had to develop and print at expense and a lot of time. =============== Life is so simple, but we insist on making it complicated Confucius 551 - 479 BC =============== Peace Jim my web site: http://www.ChinaBlix.com .
  3. canon powershot....its a great camera it has everything you mentioned and more...my husband got me that camera to start out with and i took great looking photos with it. you should be able to pick one up for about $350.i have a canon rebel now and still on occasion use my powershot..if you are serious about getting into photography,i would stick with canon they are very consistant with there cameras they are the best you can get. y powershot model is a S31S. i would look on criegs list or ebay...you might find a better deal.
  4. are you going film or digital? for film i recommend the nikon fm2, for digital i'd look on ebay for a nikon D100 you might be able to get one for that price, still films the way to go for ultimate prints, nothing beats the darkroom. oh as for lenses get a 50mm lens. later you will learn that its just as hard to get pictures of things that are close as it is to take pictures of things that are far.
