adobe photoshop is what i started on... it has a lot of things you can do and it is fairly easy to use... the only problem is that it is expensive so if you go to adobe.com you can download a 30 day trial... there is a lot of different photoshops, i recommend either 6.0 elements but cs3 is the newest and i believe has just as much as 6.0 does
