Starter camera suggestions for beginner photographer?
I have always been interested in photography and have decided to take a step up by taking some classes at our local college. I would like to purchase a starter camera but do not know where to begin. I am truly a beginner and currently use a Kodak Easyshare if that tells you anything! Would I be better off consulting the instructor?

- Any SLR type camera - one where you can control everything and change the lenses. I'd go digital myself due to the quicker feedback on your results. Take a look here for some in depth advice: http://www.image-nut.com/spip.php?rubrique5
- definately consult your instructor. they may be able to ask you a few questions to identify your taste, price range & skill set. also, they probably live in your area & have been in the field for at least a few years. they might know tips or secrets in your local market to finding the best camera for your price. hint: they may know a place that gives student discounts, etc. but as for me... i really always like Nikons.
- You do need to talk to your instructor. They will be able to tell you every thing you need for the class ... 35mm SLR camera, lens, photo paper and other supplies. You can find a good used 35mm SLR on craigslist for under $200. - Not many classes require a film SLR these days as there is no darkroom requirement (UK). A syllabus for the course or a word with the tutor will make things clear. A DSLR is the best if your pocket can run to it, though there are point and shoot that offer Raw format and a Manual Mode, the shutter lag is still a problem with these though, and you may get a decent second hand DSLR for the same money. Look for Canon Digital Rebel or Pentax *ist D or DS. Or look for deals on recently updated models like the Pentax K100D or K10D. Chris
