Best camera for beginner photographer ..?
So my best friend is really into photography. She is turning 18 and we will be graduating in June. For her birthday I planned on getting her a camera (the film ones, not digital) but I have NO IDEA where to start. I wanted to get her a good lens, camera and tripod (plus film obv.) but am not looking to spend more than $300.00. Unless her mom plans on helping me out. I was looking at the Nikon Body with 35-70mm f3.5-4.8 Zoom Nikkor lens. (I have no idea what any of that means) LOL It was this one: http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3DPhotography%2BFilm%2BCameras%26y%3DSearch%26fr%3Dfptb-amo%26ei%3Dutf-8%26js%3D1%26x%3Dwrt&w=141&h=118&imgurl=www.samys.com%2Fimages%2Ffront_page%2Ffilm_cameras.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.samys.com%2F&size=3.5kB&name=film_cameras.jpg&p=Photography%20Film%20Cameras&type=JPG&oid=36478f7030f092ec&no=2&tt=81523 Any suggestions? She is also going to school for photography so I don't want to spend much and stuff just incase they have certain requirements for the cameras. Also, is this a good tripod? http://www.adorama.com/BATPDX.html

- Yes, you are on the right track ... photo schools start students on film and later (usually in their second year) offer digital imagery as an elective ... In those "digital" classes, they are more likely to be learning how to use a digital darkroom, because by then they know everything they need to know how to operate a camera and use a real darkroom You may be able to find even a better camera, for less money on craigslist, but to know how much better a Nikon N90 is than a N70, you will have to consult your best friend. The used Nikon F100, F4 and F5's are good if you can afford them. If the school is Brooks, Art Center or Rochester Institute of Technology, she will be needing both the camera you are buying for her and a 4x5 view camera ... (about $1000 used with lens, film holders, focusing cloth and tripod kit) Many graduating students sell their school 4x5 "kits" when they leave, knowing that they will be working in a field that does not require such a camera, so there is no need for her to run out and buy a new one if she needs one for school
- Different schools have different requirements, so maybe you should get her a gift card for a camera store instead. At the Art Institute of Colorado, we started with digital cameras. The only film cameras we used were large format cameras. The best tripods are made of carbon fiber... Manfrotto and Gitzo make the best tripods.
