I am a beginner photographer. Do I want a DSLR?
I want to learn how to take great pictures. I have a point and shoot right now. The pictures I think suck. I am part of car clubs. I will be taking pictures of cars and family members too. Not too many action shots.

- Nikon D40 is your best bet. Yes, you want digital as a beginner. Yes, you want a light camera, yes you want an easy to use if you just want to set it on "auto" and take best pictures even if you "point and shoot"
- You may indeed find a DSLR will do what you want, however it is what is called a fully adjustable camera, so you have to choose the exposure settings. You may want to take a class in photography, using a 35 mm SLR to learn all the basics (and avoid the frustrations caused by the favored "try and fail" method used by many). A good used 35 mm Nikon or Canon SLR with standard zoom lens should cost under $200 on craigslist. After you have honed your skills with the 35 mm, then look into buying a DSLR that matches the lenses you have with your 35 mm camera system. Nikon = Nikon, Canon = Canon, etc.
