Questions from a beginner to photography!?

Well, I am new to photography, up until now I 've only been using standard cameras that produced low quality pictures. Everybody is going on and on about dslr cameras. How much does a relatively good camera cost, and is there any point for a beginner to buy it? What kind of camera would you suggest for a beginner and how could I slow get introduced into using it without taking classes( I can't afford them right now) Thanks a lot!

  1. Hi well, this is going back a few years ago but I took advanced A level at college, bought a Pentax P30T, which was a highly rated manual camera at the time. It took normal film rolls, and part of the course was learning to develope our own negatives and pictures I found that my camera was great at learning about shutter speed, exposure and that, and it was exciting and fun watching my pics appear in the dark room. The downside came when I was trying to do coursework and most of my fellow classmates had automatic cameras that did all the settings for you. Nowadays its all digital so most of the fun has gone. I would say go to a second hand shop, ebay or try the free ads, buy a normal film camera, experiment with it, learn what the settings and switches do, you can look on web or get a book from a library, then progress to a better camera. Wheres the fun when the camera does it all for you, you don't learn anything and because its all digital it can be altered on photoshop or any digital editing software. Anyone can point and shoot, even my 4yr old niece, learn from the basics up, you'll appreciate more what cameras did, and what they can do now :o) Hope that might help
  2. Ok anything from Nikon, Cannon Olympus or Pentax stay away from Sony you should only need one lens 18 to 200 mm if you get this range on the one lens then you should never neewd to change it and thus your camera will last alot longer you don’t want to be changing lenses on a digital SLR as you then get dust in the camera. But that kind of lens would cost £200 you should be able to get your hands on a cannon 350D or Nikon D70 for just under £200 if you are buying a used camera make sure there is no dust in the camera. You should be able to find a decent set up for £300 including an external flash.
  3. i would get something like a canon xTi, it's a great camera, for the price. it was my first camera. get that ($300 used), a 50/1.8 ($90 new), and an tamron 18-200 for $300 if you want the flexability. that was my first camera and my first two lenses. i never took a photography class in my life. i learned from other photographers i've met. get to know photogs, and shoot with more experienced people as much as possible. it's the best way to learn. good luck.
