- If you really have an interest in learning photography as a beginner I recommend the following: * Mamiya RZ67 or Nikon N90s * Ilford HP5+ Film * Tank Developer ($10) * Inexpensive film scanner * A night class or two
- your links dont work. i'd try to buy a used canon rebel or nikon d40...they are both intro dslr's and cost more than $300 so used is really your only option.
- I recommend that you bypass 35mm photography all together. The future of photography is DIGITAL. You will also SAVE money but not having to buy film or wasted paper. You will have to buy batteries and memory cards, but they are all re-useable. As any 35mm beginner can tell you....the greatest expenses are from wasted film, paper, darkroom chemicals, etc.... All of these are now history with the introduction of digital cameras. If you take a "bad" photo you can tell instantly...and the only thing wasted was time needed to re-shoot the image. I strongly recommed that people consider the Canon EOS Rebel line-up for beginners to intermediate. The Canon Rebel model XSi is a good DSLR camera with 12 megapixels and a ton of great advanced features. Unfortunately you won't be able to get much of ANYTHING in the way of Digital SLR cameras unless you are will to boost your budget to around $800. Other GREAT choices are the Nikon D-60, D-90 or even the D-200. You could buy a "point and shoot" style digital camera for less....but you might be unhappy with the inability to change lenses or lack of other features. It could be a good starting point for the two of you to learn photography techniques and get a start. I recently saw that Wal-Mart has the Canon camera for around $800. or slightly less??? You may also be able to buy a good used one on e-bay or other auction sites.
- Honestly I wouldn't start with a Nikon D40. I just now got mine and i've been doing this for almost 4 years. I started out with a Canon Power Shot SX100 IS. From this camera I taught myself how to focus certain images and get the hang of it. With that camera alone it published me into a book and won a thousand dollars for a picture.:) Good luck with everything!
- If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28.html It just came out on November 4, 2008. It's an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel digital camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HDTV quality video [Quicktime]; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $315 at amazon.com. Here's an actual handheld picture of the moon: http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/bf/1b/a83ac060ada0881604bad110.L.jpg Good luck!
