Beginner photographer looking for a good, solid camera.?
I am looking into buying a camera for more than just casual picture-taking. I'm just getting into photography and would love it if someone could recommend a camera starter kit of some sort and maybe some software for mac too? I am looking into the canon rebel XTI or something sort of like it. Any ideas?

- I'd look into the Canon Rebel XSi. It has very nice specs for the price! As far as software goes, I'm a fan of Adobe Photoshop but it's very pricey. You might want to look into a free program called GIMP. I hear it's pretty good and free stuff is always nice!
- The Canon Rebel XTi is great! I highly recommend it! Photoshop Elements 7.0 is a good editing software too!
- Why not start with something simple like a SLR 35mm K1000 that's expandable with lenses and filters for a relatively inexpensive price. Learn the basics. Then, work your way up to the digital programables.
- It's really your preference - what features and functions. I like the Nikon D40 for beginners. As a resource for all your camera questions including what camera is right for you, Ken Rockwell has a great site. I hope this helps and good luck!
- I prefer and recommend the minolta X-700. I use a very versatile 28-70mm Tokina telephoto lense which also has a Macro setting. It can also; automatically adjust the speed and aperiture settings; very handy for the beginner.
- I would go for the Nikon D40, I got it as my first DSLR and have no regrets! In terms for lenses, it depend what you would need the camera for most. Macros, landscapes etc. I have 70-300mm lens which is a joy to use, but it just depend on your usage for the camera. What ever camera you want, you should buy a camera bag and a memory card (obviously!) A good editing program for a Mac is Photoshop Elements 6, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adobe-Systems-Inc-Photoshop-Elements/dp/B0012IMWDW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1236489023&sr=8-1 It isn't as expensive as more top end Photoshop, but it has everything you would need for editing photos. It might be useful to get "the Missing Manual" http://www.amazon.co.uk/Photoshop-Elements-Mac-Missing-Manual/dp/0596519362/ref=pd_bxgy_sw_h__img_b
- a good solid camera? i had a 35mm pentax that took 10 years of abuse from me horrible abuse, too. i have an olympus e-500 that i've been abusing for about 3 years now...it's holding up well i've heard good things about the canon rebels, you probably won't be disappointed.
- We realize that there are many bargain professional cameras out there besides the Canon Rebel series. Here's a bargain offering for a Nikon D40X body for $280.00 from samys.com: http://www.samys.com/product_detail.php?item=10225 Good luck!
