- are you thinking about digital or 35 mm/traditional? i'm assuming digital. I would start with a canon rebel ;)
- All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on....... The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet. I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice. The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need. Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures. I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera. Good Luck my suggestion go to this link for help http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camera-buying-guide/ http://www.sears.com/shc/s/dap_10153_12605_DAP_Holiday+Splurge+Camera?adCell=W3
- Photography implies control over both the technical and composition of images. To do that you will need some kind of fully adjustable camera whether it is a 35 mm SLR or DSLR will depend upon if you are willing to take a class or two in photography and of course your budget. For under $150, you can find excellent 35 mm SLR's with a standard zoom lens for on craigslist in a city near you. If your goal is to shoot digital images, then for under $450 you can buy an entry level DSLR. These can be found on Amazon dot com While P&S cameras can be used to hone your composition, all but a very view take control over the exposure of the image and have tiny sensors when compared to a DSLR's (about 15 times smaller)

- You don't mention how much you're spending. DSLRS start about $450- and go up. To get your feet wet on the cheap is a point and shoot Canon A590 IS. It's $109-+ shipping at Dell, on line. It does have aperture/shutter priority where one could set shutter speed or aperture, or independently both. It has image stabilizer for shaky hands, viewfinder and is very good on batteries.

My dad, who is not a professional photographer but has HUGE passion for it, has this camera and its fantastic! It takes brilliant photos and you can get all the extras for it like black and white lens and wide angles lens etc which allows u to really experiment with your photography!
