  1. An handmade copy was made on a support , later used for printing: one of the most ancient techniques was probably the so called silk screen or serigraphy (used in China since 900 CE) . It is a stencil method of print making in which a design is imposed on a screen of silk or other fine mesh, with blank areas coated with an impermeable substance, and ink is forced through the mesh onto the printing surface. You can obtain different colors repeating the process for each color. In the middle age in Europe copies were hand made one by one It was also possible to reproduce (in black & white and after hand copy of the original) with printing press and later with other techniques like lithography, but printing techniques (a part the press for books) became well known in the western world only in the last decade of 1700 (around 1796) . Meanwhile , between 1825 and 1837 the French inventors Niepcé and Daguerre perfectioned photography
  2. Both Japanese woodcut and European stone lithography were used. Artists made color separations through observation and made approximations of the original, not exact copies. Toulouse Lautrec's posters are an example of this method. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.toulouse-lautrec-foundation.org/Jane-Avril-Iii.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.toulouse-lautrec-foundation.org/Jane-Avril-Iii.html&usg=__j9FMaNByw7B0aGvWU3HgtUvyfog=&h=500&w=345&sz=58&hl=en&start=20&sig2=lnXCLzm3DoJM_1V97ktK4g&um=1&tbnid=RO6SG9WLhJeG6M:&tbnh=130&tbnw=90&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djane%2Bavril%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DG%26um%3D1&ei=_AT3SZXFBpe4sgPPrZj8Dg
