  1. Just get stuck in and take loads of photos using different settings, write down these setting and then look at the results and then you will learn what settings on your camera are best for you.
  2. The Canon Powershot SX110 is a great little compact camera, I used a friends once when I could not be bothered to carry an SLR. It has Manual controls, feels very well made and the images were excellent. As far as learning about photography, the best thing you can do with this camera is learn about composition and framing.. Read this page and then go out and experiment. http://photoinf.com/General/Robert_Berdan/Composition_and_the_Elements_of_Visual_Design.htm .
  3. You have a good camera. To help you, join http://www.redbubble.com/ which is totally free, then you can join in the following groups on there. http://www.redbubble.com/groups/for-the-love-of-canon http://www.redbubble.com/groups/the-compact-group-1-per-day Where you can display your work also. People are friendly and are only to willing to give advice. There maybe a group for the area that you live in and there are also groups that specialise in flowers, landscape, seascape, horses, portraiture, Black & White, etc etc. And as its free you have nothing to lose. Hope this helps.
  4. you could try to find a local photography class or club. there would be people there with experience who would be willing to help you and share tips and ideas. i wish i could find one in my area, but so far no luck.
  5. I go with an older used slr any day over even a good point and shoot. You can get some good image with a camera like that, but it seriously limits your creative potential. The size of the lens puts limits on the depth of field, and you can't really control the focus manually because you can't see through the lens. Another benefit of an slr is that your not dependent on a monitor to take pictures. So the battery will last much longer.
